McFedries is afflicted with Crohn's disease and has spoken in many interviews about his struggle with the disorder. It has not stopped him from competing in mixed martial arts, but he does believe it has a large effect on his athletic ability.
McFedries stated in an interview with FightLockdown that if he were not doing MMA that he would like to finish his degree and possibly do music videos or movies.[1]
Drew McFedries made his mixed martial arts debut in a loss to Nate Quarry in August 2001. He rebounded quickly, earning wins in his next 4 fights. With a 4-1 professional record, McFedries debuted at UFC 65 on November 11, 2006, earning a TKO victory over Alessio Sakara. McFedries struggled to find consistency in the octagon, alternating wins and losses in his next 4 fights. A loss to Martin Kampmann, a win over Jordan Radev, a loss to Patrick Côté and a win over Marvin Eastman. McFedries then lost via Kimura to Mike Massenzio at UFC Fight Night 15 and to Thales Leites via Rear Naked Choke at UFC 90. In 2009 he returned with a TKO victory over Xavier Foupa-Pokam at UFC 98. He then was choked out by Tomasz Drwal at UFC 103. Following the loss McFedries was released from his contract.
McFedries was expected to face Joey Villaseñor on September 11, 2010 at Shark Fights 13, but was replaced by Danillo Villefort due to injury.[2]
In his first post-UFC fight, McFedries faced Gary Tapusoa on January 29, 2011 at Titan Fighting Championships 16.[3] He won the fight via TKO in the third round.
McFedries then faced Garret Olson on August 27, 2011 at ProElite 1. He got another TKO victory, in the second round.
